On The Horizon

Three Comfort Quilt Tops of Horizon Blocks
All finish at 40.5 x 57

I've been making Horizon blocks since last year. They consist of a 5 x 9.5 inch piece and a contrasting 1.5 xx 5 inch piece.   I made them when I had scraps  leftover from making other quilts or I made them each month in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) color of the month if I had a scrap in that size. Over the years I have also been given what appear to be leftovers from layer cakes - pinked 10 inch squares.  So I also used a little pile of those accumulated layer cake squares to make blocks.

The other day after I finished up three tops of Eight Patches I decided that maybe I should count the Horizon blocks. Again I was surprised I was only 6 blocks short of three child sized tops. So I made 6 more blocks and then made 3 tops.

  1. I love seeing all the fun fabrics in the close up shots. So much fun to put those block collections to such good use. They do build up surprisingly fast!

  2. Fantastic as always Cathy. I love that you're digging into boxes and counting up the blocks of your scrappy work and finding sooooo many tops ready to assemble. I know it soothes the holes in your heart from this very difficult year you're having. Hugs to you as you wrap your community in warm hugs!

  7. So you did it - checked your Horizon block stash and found you could make three flimsies from them! Amazing. I hadn’t been struck by these blocks but now they are sewn together.....Wow. What an impact they make together. They’re really great.

  8. You've done it again! After viewing blocks on your blog, I need to stop and piece the blocks, this time the Horizon block. My quilt will be done in solid fabrics with the contrast strip in black. Happy stitching!

  9. Such a lot of bright happiness all in one spot!
Do you have a hard time stopping making these fun blocks when you turn them into quilts? I know I had a terrible time not cutting more Glitter blocks, or Ohio stars after I got the tops done...

  11. I haven’t met a Lynn Dykstra block that I didn’t love, and Horizon is another one on my ever-growing list of Must Makes. Your tops are fabulous, and I especially love your version of flipping alternating horizon lines! That is so clever! Insert yet another hundred heart eyes here….

  12. After seeing your Horizon Blocks together in a quilt, I'm inspired to dig into my
stack of 5 inch strips and start narrowing it down. Thanks so much for the great ideas! Hope your year is ending up better than it started! Take care and know you are a great inspiration to so many of us scrap quilters. From JAS
