Guess what!
(No, not chicken butt)
I've finished my current 20 minute challenge. I challenge myself to work at least 20 minutes a day on a UFO that has blocks that are rather boring or tedious to make. That UFO has been Clarissa which has been inspired by a quilt made by Clarissa White Alford that I saw back in 2016 at Kathy's Quilts.
I now have 36 twelve inch blocks that consist of 36 two inch hourglasses. That's a total of 1296 hourglasses and a total of 5184 pieces.
I've been looking around in my stash for something to use for sashing. I don't have a lot of pieces of yardage of any length but I did figure I could use this rose themed fabric since it has some blues and pinks in it just like the blocks. I usually don't dither a lot and just go with the first thing I find in the stash but after all the work of making all those hourglasses 20 minutes each day I didn't want them to get lost in the quilt. The roses are too busy I think.
I have a lot of pieces of Kona Snow that I have on hand as background fabric for my 30s reproduction prints. I think I will use that for the sashing.
Now I need to do some sashing through the snow.
That's a great technique! I'm trying to have something sitting by the machine (or on the ironing board) to work on while waiting...for something to bake, for DH to get home, before it's time to walk the dog. Or for when I just need some fabric time that isn't laundry.
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha ha, sashing through the snow! I think your decision is spot on as the roses did rather detract form all that work! It's going to be a fabulous quilt :)
ReplyDeleteI dislike dithering, too . . . but do you have a kind of rosy pink tone-on-tone or small print? Because it looks as though all of the blocks have red-to-rose-to-pink in them.
ReplyDeleteYou could even do cornerstones....something interesting...like an hourglass maybe?
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute timer! I'd bet that is an antique! You know by now that I love pink roses, but I do think the white or maybe a pale pink solid would be better for sashings. I also like the idea of hourglass cornerstones to tie those blocks together. ---"Love"
ReplyDeleteThe blocks look great in the snow!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely the snow. Roses are too busy and make the blocks fuzzy. As you say, after all that work on the blocks you need to make them shine out.
ReplyDeleteNormally I love your busy sashing choices, but the Kona Snow looks marvelous with the fancy pieced Clarissa blocks.:)
ReplyDeleteThe Kona snow is definitely the better choice. While the roses are lovely, the blocks get lost. They show up much better on the snow.

LOL sashing through the snow!
ReplyDeleteI love the white sashing!
These blocks are labour intensive for sure, but I only made 20 of them!
It's so awesome that our quilts will be cousins of Clarissa!
I love your chicken butt timer! I use the old yellow timer from my childhood, the one my mother set to make sure I practiced the piano for 30 minutes. It ticks and dings with authority. Your Clarissa blocks are wonderful and deserve to shine with the plain sashing :)
ReplyDeleteWell, it looks like my comment didn't go through so here it is again. Your Clarissa blocks are lovely. The snow sets them off better than the floral and they deserve to shine. Have fun with your decision, even if it's looking further in your stash.
ReplyDeletewonderful accomplishment - I agree with the snow sashings
ReplyDeleteWhy am I suddenly humming Jingle Bells?
ReplyDeleteLove your Clarissas!
The rose fabric might be a little busy but I think it gives it a vintage look
