NOT in the Hoop

I've been doing some hand quilting with perle #8.   I'm quilting through the middle of the 1 inch squares moving around and around the square.  I started out with the 80 x 80 quilt in the square pvc hoop but had to move it too often so opted not to use a hoop and now I'm moving right along with the quilting on...

...Plain Brown Wrapper. 

(I counted cream and ecru as brown for this quilt).

    Busy quilt..... I will have to keep in mind not all hand quilting has to be IN a hoop.

    Oh This will look so lovely--I really like this quilt...so cozy and warm in those colorways. I never quilt in a hoop--(well almost never--I used to) hugs, Julierose

    I don't like using a hoop either. It makes things so awkward.

    I don't use a hoop for hand quilting either!
    I like the little bits of color here and there.
    The whites and ecru are perfect contrast.
    Great progress.

    Wow, that is a wonderful quilt. I will have to get out of my box and see if the big stitch quilting I plan can be done without a hoop. Thanks for the inspiration.

    I have never used a hoop for quilting. After a few years of freehand quilting I bought a hoop, never get the hang of it and gave it to another quilter. I'm happy with hand quilting without a hoop.

    I've done very little hand quilting, but when our guild was quilting a Grandmother's Flower Garden, I found the hoop to be awkward and hard on my gripping hand. Don't think I could quilt a full-size quiltby hand, definitely not in a timely fashion.

    An amazing 'brown' quilt, I love it! I too don't use a hoop anymore, I simply bunch a handful of the quilt in my left hand underneath and quilt with my right hand, Jen Kingwell calls it 'lap quilting' where the weight of the quilt provides the tension. Not sure if that explains things really, but it does work so easily.

    It never occurred to me to try quilting without a hoop. I'm struggling to get to grips with my first ever hand quilt so I'm going to try without the hoop!

    I have a new big stitch project in the works, and the 2 hoops I had did not work with the bulk of the fabric sandwich! I am going to do it , NO HOOP! Thanks for the encouragement to give that a try! Good luck with your goal of getting that all quilted! It is awesome!

    Those browns are so pretty together. I don't remember this quilt at all, but I like the way all the squares get bigger and bigger. I have considered quilting a large quilt without a hoop but wasn't sure if it would work out. Are you able to get a good grip on the quilt and make the stitches show up good on the back?

    Not being a hand quilter at all, I wondered if the hoop was strictly necessary. How long can you hand stitch at a stretch before you need to take a break?
