Fractured Rainbows
96 x 96
It's a flimsy!
This quilt was released as a free FreeSpirit pattern called Garden Mosaic. I used just rainbow colors so changed the name to suit my quilt.
This quilt has also lovingly been referred to as Totally Demented by Sally who previously finished a quilt top maybe because she used bat wings and eye of newt, and Gayle , the original temptress who sent us a link with photo of the quilt and who still has a work in process. Thanks, Gayle!
The Totally Demented Garden Mosaic with Fractured Rainbows consists of 2048 two inch unfinished HSTs.
At the beginning of the process I didn't really have many 2 inch scraps ready to use. That's not a size I usually save in a bin because I have made very few quilts that use that size of pieces. So I went through my scrap chunks to find scraps to use. I think that took me longer to sort and cut scraps than to actually make all the HSTs. I used an Easy Angle ruler to cut pieces for my HSTs. I used muslin as the neutral. I was going to use scrappy neutrals but when I skimmed the instructions I saw that it required 7.5 yards (if I remember correctly) of background fabric I decided I didn't want to use my quickly dwindling supply of neutrals on such small pieces so I used muslin that I had on hand instead.
My OMG (One Monthly Goal) for September was to finish up sewing together the rows on eight 24 inch blocks. I mentioned in that post that I'd give myself a smiley face bonus if I completed the top.
😊😊😊😊😊
I really wasn't sure I could make this one!
Oh My STars!!!! I LOVE IT!! and wow -what a quilt!!! You get a lot of smiley faces!!!
ReplyDeleteWOW! You deserve the smiley face and a lot more. I'm using 2.5" pieces in mine and only making 1/4 of the quilt. I'm to the point I need to cut more neutral squares -- maybe this week.
ReplyDeleteI can't even imagine completing a quilt like that! It is a beautiful and very fascinating quilt! Definitely a lesson in patience and sheer determination! ---"Love"
ReplyDeleteI like all of the bright colors you used! so cheerful.
ReplyDeleteThe muslin gives our eyes a place to rest. Lovely top, Cathy. Congrats.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, if totally demented! I'll bet this flimsy is fairly heavy. Good that you used the muslin as your neutral, it's so difficult to keep neutrals in good supply isn't it? Yet I rarely think to buy them, always attracted to the more colorful pieces I guess.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness it's wonderful! Hooray for the finish!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful fractal appearance--this is really lovely hugs, Julierose
ReplyDeleteOh my Oh my! That is totally insane! But what a spectacular quilt. I am always short neutrals and opt for muslin a lot. I really like moda's muslin it hand quilts so well.
ReplyDeleteI am amazed at how quickly you finished this quilt! It is a wonder to behold and definitely deserving of the smiles. Well done!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Of COURSE you could do this one, even with one hand tied behind your back while blindfolded and cooking dinner. Way to go!!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness!!!!! I feel I ought to get out my calculator to work out how many HST units there are in your big quilt. However, I expect you know that answer already! A fabulous finish, congratulations.
ReplyDeleteThat was fast !! ;-):-):-):-):-) Mine is still in the "instructions printed on paper" mode :-):-):-) Cannot give you enough smiley faces :-)
ReplyDeleteYou really did finish that fast! You are probably one of a very small handful to actually finish this quilt. I'm sure it must have used up all of your scraps too. It must weigh a ton though because of the seams.
ReplyDeleteYou deserve not only smiley faces, but gold stars, and chocolate bars! Absolutely amazing and I'm not a bit surprised that you and Sally both got the flimsy done in record time.
ReplyDeletePat
You have given this quilt the perfect name. It is so pretty with such itty bitty pieces. I admire all that stitch itty bitty pieces more than you know, lol.
ReplyDeletexx, Carol
Way to go! You definitely deserve your smiley faces. I like the muslin; it helps to keep all the colourful scraps under control.
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful and what an accomplishment! Would you be willing to share a link to the pattern?
ReplyDeleteYou gave yourself more than one smiley face but you deserve each of them and even more. Even though this quilt only has 16 blocks, they are each beautiful blocks. It is a beautiful quilt and the lively colors just dance throughout it. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteThat really is fabulous, Cathy! Fractured Rainbows is a great name for it. I bet it is a lot of gun to look at up close, in person!
ReplyDeleteAmazing! Such a great quilt, but all those small HST's would have driven me crazy!
ReplyDeleteThis one is stunning! I can't imagine me having the patience and fortitude to sew up all those tiny pieces. I applaud you!
ReplyDeleteYou deserve a few more smileys....Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!
Woohoo!!!! You deserve all the smiley faces!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm still stitching away on mine. September is always a month packed with distractions, so not much sewing gets done. The really busy part has now passed, though, so I may be able to get back to my machine! Dementia is my goal!
WOWZER! It's stunning! Congratulations! ;^)
ReplyDeleteWow that is amazing. So many small pieces, looks wonderful. Great patience and result.
ReplyDeleteWow! This is just stunning :)
ReplyDeleteOh, Cathy, you got'erdun! I contributed some HSTs to the effort. Hmmm, wonder if I can find them? LOL! Congratulations on a wonderful creation.
ReplyDeleteThis looks absolutely amazing! Thanks for linking up with Elm Street Quilts One Monthly Goal and congrats on your finish!
ReplyDeleteAh! It was very dangerous for me to see this. I am currently working on Sue Garman's Omigosh quilt because I'm a glutton for punishment. Now I've added this quilt to my list!
ReplyDeleteThis is super awesome! I love the riot of colour. Well done finishing it off.
