Finished

Jack's Chain
66 x 80
Hand quilted

I used lots of bright little 3 inch 9 patches. Some were swapped.  I've grown to love these little 9Ps. It's amazing what will sometimes show up in a little 1 inch square.

I used lots of different colored threads and several size 10 quilting betweens.

I quilted an X in the 9 patches and quilted about 1/4 inch around the inside of the triangles and in the ditch around the hexagons - all in navy thread.  I used a quilt stencil, white marking pencil and those different colored threads...

... and hand quilted in the center of those hexagons.  I'm thinking I should have stitched in the ditch around those triangles too because they kind of poof out around the edges but really don't see any sense in spending hand quilting time stitching a lot in the ditch where no one will see.  So poofy it is and poofy it stays.

This quilt was a challenge for me in several ways. But I'm pleased with how it turned out. I was especially worried about the binding around a quilt like this but I persevered and got it done.

This is the back.

This will go into the hope chest as a wedding quilt for my grandson. He's only 7 but he will get a quilt from me for his wedding no matter what.  I always like to plan ahead.

And that makes 3 wedding quilts for my 3 grandkids.  They were all challenges for me and all hand quilted.  There's a Pickle Dish for Kayla (age 11) , A Double Wedding Ring for Isabelle (age 11) and a Jack's Chain for Jacob (age 7).

Now, I need to buy a hope chest!

I'll be busy with grandkids tomorrow so later in the day I will link up to:

  1. Oh, I absolutely adore this quilt! (Actually, I adore all three in that pic at the bottom of the post!)
(I need to start stashing away nine-patches again, I can see it now...)
You're braver than I am for persevering on that scalloped edge. I would have totally cheated and cobbled something into the gaps to square it off!

  6. They are all beauties! Challenges? They look downright difficult. You did a great job and what a good idea to make them while they are young... and you are young. Thanks for sharing them.

  8. What a wonderful array of quilts on the clothesline! Each one is a special beauty and definitely a part of you went into each one. It is a handsome legacy and I hope that each one is well-labeled.

  11. Your Jack's Chain quilt is a very intriguing design, and the colors and fabrics you used are perfect! I can't imagine piecing it, and even more so, hand quilting it; great job on both! The other two "hope chest" quilts are gorgeous too! Three lucky (and surprised?) grandchildren someday.---"Love"

  15. All 3 are impressive but the Jack's Chain is my fave. I love the way the blue background makes the rings float. Well Done!

  16. That is an amazing collection of quilts! What lucky grandchildren you have! I'm glad you get to spend time with them now, too - although I don't have any grandkids yet, I hear that is the best job in the world! I'm impressed with both your hand quilting (all quilts should be poofy!) and the pretty scalloped edge. Gorgeous finish!

  17. Wonderful work Cathy! Fantastic. Love the dark hexi in the middle. It makes the colours sing louder. Your hand quilting is just gorgeous. Looks so even and neat. Great work all around. All three of them are indeed heirlooms. Congrats!! ;^)

  18. I love this quilt. Thank you for shsowing it and sharing the quilting process. I've been making 3 inch 9-patches as leaders and enders for the last year, and have been wondering what on earth I should do with them. I don't have nearly enough yet, but this is definitely something to bear in mind.

  27. OMG your Jack's Chain is beautiful. Definitely on my todo list. I'm putting away "wedding" quilts, too, but my two oldest grands are nearing marriage age so I'd better get crackin'.

  28. I LOVE the "poofy"! It looks so squidgy and soft. How can you bear to wait so long to give them to them - people always say that you must have the patience of a saint to hand quilt, that's so wrong...having patience to wait 20 years to give this quilt is what patience is all about, haha!!! All three of them are absolutely stunning quilts, and what a wonderful gift to receive :)
