It's a top!
Orphan Gabriel
54 x 78
For this quilt I used 58 six inch orphan blocks. I only made a few of the blocks. Most have been given to me by others.
I made Quarter Square Triangle (QST) blocks for an alternate block.
I don't have yards of a lot of different fabrics so my choices were limited as to what to use in the QSTs. I have quite a bit of that lighter green I have used for backings so decided to use that and a variety of darker green scrap chunks to make the six inch QSTs.
I learned through trial and error a long time ago that when I use QSTs as an alternate block it is best to use an uneven number of blocks in rows and columns so the same block appears in all four corners for a more balanced look.
And sew on...
Wonderful! Your choices for the QSTs let all those orphan blocks SING. What a great scrappy quilt top.
ReplyDeleteGreen has never been my favorite, but it's starting to grow on me. Very pretty!
ReplyDeleteI like to try for all four corners to be the same too. Occasionally with larger blocks it doesn't work out.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that you share your piecing process on these quilts because I saw it that you put the triangles on the blocks to make them square but you made QST instead. Much easier I would think. You always come up with such good plans.
ReplyDeleteQST’s are so versatile and you used them to make all those orphans shine.
ReplyDeleteOh, I believe this is my favourite Orphan Block Quilt. It's has the same name as my son. :^D The hourglass is always a great alternative block. I love that only one fabric is the same and the other one is scrappy. Again, bravo on your creativity to get another quilt together. 💖 ;^)
