Thank Goodness I Don't Have To Worry About Second Sock Syndrome

I now have two crocheted socks. I didn't even think I was going to be able to crochet one. A long time ago (maybe ten years or so?) it seemed knitting socks was all the rage. I haven't knit since high school but I do crochet quite a bit. Well anyway...I picked up a few skeins of different sock yarns as well as a book on crocheting socks and then I stuck them away for a rainy day or for a day after retirement. Since I have been retired almost 7 years I decided it was time to dig out all those things I thought I was going to do when I was retired. And so, as you can see  I crocheted a pair of socks.

Now no worries about SSS or Second Sock Syndrome. According to various sources on the internet..."The Second Sock Syndrome is a widespread phenomenon. It is characterized by the fact that the second sock of a pair takes much longer to complete than the first sock did - or that the second sock isn't even started."

The second sock fits better than the first at the toe and heel but they do feel soft and comfy.

I rarely leave my house but since I had a few errands to do I decided to give my socks a trial run. I put on my socks and my workboots and I was ready to go.

Wearing my fancy socks is kind of like wearing fancy underwear...no one knows what's under there but me.

And I decided after my trial run that even though my socks look heavy they are not as heavy as the socks I  usually wear in my workboots. So next time I go out I might wear my fancy socks with my sneakers. I might wear some fancy underwear too. No, I don't crochet underwear!

And, guess what...I started crocheting another pair of socks. I still have more sock yarn for a rainy (or snowy or windy or sunny) retirement day. Stay tuned!

  1. Thanks for that term, Second Sock Syndrome. It is nice to have a name (diagnosis!) of what I have. I keep thinking about hanging those single socks on the mantle at Christmas! I did finally knit two socks that match last year, taking a year to make #2, but they are not as comfy as yours appear to be. I wear them around the house. I will stick to hats and mittens from now on!

  2. Enjoy your socks. There is nothing better to wear than hand knit socks. I imagine crocheted socks are similar. I always knit two socks at the same time; knit both toes, foot, heels, leg. I use two sets of needles and off I go. Lovely yarn.

  3. They are really stylish with color and texture. Never heard of second sock syndrome, but I will never make to one sock syndrome. I knit tons of scarfs years ago for about 5 years because of color and texture and they did not have to be fitted. When the local yarn stores closed, I realized I was such a slow knitter, I would throw myself all into quilting (once again, doesn't have to be fitted).

  4. I do the same as Berkshire Tatter above when I knit socks. When I get to the end of sock #1, there's just the toe and ends left on sock #2. Not sure if that would translate to crochet socks. though. Yours look lovely and cushy. Congrats on the finish.

  6. I love those socks. I have to find a good crocheted sock pattern. I have yet to make a pair of socks. I am looking forward to seeing your next pair. Are you using the same pattern?

  7. Those are such pretty socks! I would love to learn to knit or crochet socks. Maybe a book to teach me would be the key. Enjoy your new pair, Cathy, and keep going!

  8. I'm happy you conquered Second Sock Syndrome. I think you are so clever to be able to crochet socks. I'm managing my Granny Stripes which is taking forever to turn into a blanket.

  12. I just love how your crocheted socks came out!! I've never known there were pattern books out for that; I used to knit but since my arthritis set in I find it less painful to crochet...still working on my blankie;))) hugs, Julierose

  15. Good on you, beating the dreaded second sock syndrome! It is indeed a real thing, and happened to me on my very first pair. No more, I'm pleased to say, as I knit my socks flat on two needles, and do both together now at the same time.

  16. Nice job on the socks Cathy! Such beautiful colors too. I haven't knit or crocheted since about high school either but I'd rather be sewing or quilting.
