Hand quilted
Usually when I make my version of an antique quilt I hand quilt it. For this one I used ecru perle #12. I just love how you can feel the fabric get softer and softer as I quilt.
I used mostly pink and brown civil war reproduction prints and used up most of my pinks. Not all of the fabrics were reproduction but ones that I thought would look okay together with the reproductions..
My basket is different from the one in the antique quilt. I like the original basket but it has a bias handle and I'm not too keen on making bias to match each little basket.
There's one light pink fabric I should probably not have used because it doesn't blend in and and stands out like a sore thumb but it has baskets on it so I used it. My quilt; my weird rules!
The binding is a brown and red print.
And the backing is a pinkish brown.
I think with all this work it will now go into the hope chest for my first great grandchild. I guess maybe I should label it with those instructions.
And sew it goes...
Your basket quilt is beautiful. I didn't notice the very light pink four patch until you mentioned it. I agree with not making a basket with a bias handle. This basket is so pretty. Love, love, love!
ReplyDeleteOh I love this one, so pretty and feminine!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous quilt! I love the light pink fabric with baskets... it's a perfect addition! Congratulations on finishing a hand quilted treasure!
ReplyDeleteOh, yes - do add instructions with the quilt as to who is has been set aside for. I agree about the bias handles. For those who appliqué regularly it is not such a big deal but since I don't, it is.
ReplyDeleteThat's so beautiful, Cathy! I love the pink and brown combination, and your basket blocks set in the 4 patches. Hand quilting does give a quilt such a wonderfully soft texture!
ReplyDeleteI think your quilt is beautiful. I normally don’t use a lot of brown but your combination of brown with pink really works. I think the pale pink basket works because of where you placed it, in the wings, not centre stage so it blends in very nicely with the other stronger and deeper pinks. Love your hand quilting. A quilt with so many small pieces in the patchwork deserves to be hand quilted. And DO label the quilt in your Hope Chest. I’m a great believer in labelling.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt and quilting! I love brown and pink quilts, and basket quilts! Great work!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and looks so snuggly!
ReplyDeleteYes, slap a label on it. Love the hand quilting and take off on the vintage quilt.
ReplyDeleteLove your pink and brown quilt. So precious!
ReplyDeleteYour 4 patch basket quilt is gorgeous . It has such a sweet vintage look to it. Well done. Have a very lovely week.
ReplyDeleteLoving those baskets--that will be a family heirloom for sure...lovely work.
ReplyDeletehugs, Julierose
I like this basket pattern better than the one with a handle, but then I love triangles and there can never be too many of them. It is a perfect quilt to save for the next generation.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to be inspired by an antique quilt a d want to make your own. I wouldn't want to make fiddly bias handles either, and the basket block you chose is very pretty, well done.
ReplyDeleteI didn't notice the light pink, either, until you pointed it out. But I think it adds to the "old fashioned" look.
ReplyDeleteOoh, oh, oh, absolutely loving the finished quilt! Also like the double pink backing very much. That light pink block is a nice bit of "sparkle" among the other prints. Now you make me want to finish mine (inspired by yours and Q's of course!). I hadn't thought of hand guilting it but as always, seeing your quilty beauty, I'm now considering that too.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, LOVE the quilt's antique vibe, Cathy! Congrats on another fabulous finish!
