Candlewick and Cross Stitch Embroideries

Long ago before retirement I used to pick up all different kinds of needlework kits at the thrift store whenever I found them. This year I decided to work on a few of them.

I've finished the candlewick embroidery for this pillow that finishes at 13 inches square. I'm not sure I'm going to turn it into a pillow. I'm going to think about it for awhile.  It may go into a future quilt with a variety of different embroidered items and laces both vintage and new.

The kit was only 95 cents and came with lace to finish but it is rather stiff lace and I don't like the look of it on the pillow anyway. It's so 80s...well, that is what was on the selvage of the stamped embroidery -- 1983.

Also for 95 cents I picked up this dresser scarf. The kit was missing the lace and thread but I have plenty of thread so no problem.  I'm going to finish this as a dresser scarf but I'm trying to decide if I should add lace or crochet a lace edging.  I have a small box of laces so will look in there to see if I have enough of anything and if not then I guess I'll see if I have enough crochet cotton for an edging. I have several vintage pamphlets with instructions for crochet edgings.

  4. I like the idea of a quilt made from various embroideries, lace etc. You certainly have enough projects tucked away to give you plenty to do for a very long time.

  7. I just got a whole bunch of stamped roses meant for painting but I'm embroidering them instead. There's enuf for top quilt top with borders. Mine cost me $5 plus I bot some extra thread but it's a change from piecing.

  8. I am always impressed when stitchers find kits for such a small cost. These are great. I love the candlewick. I agree that the lace is very 80s. I like the idea of incorporating it in a quilt.

  10. I just love the idea of creating a quilt with all the different embroidery kits. Use to Candlewick about thirty years ago, nice to see some more of it. Have a wonderful week.

  11. I love the candlewick pillow top.... you could also add borders to it and an envelope backing to make it a more useable sized pillow... but adding it to a quilt sounds fun too! I haven't used this technique in many years but used to do it when I was young.
I just love the dresser scarf kit you found on clearance... oh for things to be over in this world so I can get back to thrifting! I miss that most at this point but stay busy at home is fine too....
Have a happy week and thanks for linking these projects at Kathy's :)

  13. Beautiful projects, and both purchased at bargain prices too. I'm rather fond of candlewicking, the thicker cotton and simple stitches suit me and it is always so effective.
