I've been hand quilting a Mother Goose quiltie.
It's about time since I finished the top back in February 2017.
The Ruby Short McKim series of redwork illustrations appeared in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle on Sundays in 1920. And on Sundays in 2015 Martha at Q is for Quilter reproduced the patterns.
I have been crosshatch quilting with perle #12 (if it is not too hot to quilt in this house without a/c). I've been marking with a hera marker on these ten inch blocks.
Right now I'm working on Jack Be Nimble.
I've finished Jack Sprat and ...
...Ride a Cockhorse (although the redwork illustration was published as Ride a Stick Horse) and...
...Humpty Dumpty and...
...Old Mother Hubbard and...
...I thought this was Three Men in a Tub but it is The Three Wise Men of Gotham. (They traveled in a bowl not a tub and I'm not sure of their occupations. )
I thought this one was Little Tommy Stout pulling Pussy out of the well but it is Simple Simon.
Simple Simon went a-fishing
For to catch a whale;
All the water he could find
Was in his mother's pail!
When finished this quiltie will go into the hope chest along with "The Real Mother Goose" book. Both items will go to the first great grandchild. (I hope that doesn't happen for awhile. My oldest grandchild is only 17 years old.) I received the book as a baby shower gift when I was pregnant with my first born. He is now 47 years old. I've read the nursery rhymes many times to my kids and grandkids and now the binding is a bit fragile but I think it will be able to withstand many more years of use. I remember that my husband's cousin gave me the book and she mentioned to me that she picked it up with her S&H Green Stamps. Remember those?

ReplyDeleteWe had a Mother Goose book that got read and re-read nearly to tatters - not as pretty as yours, though. Good for you for hanging onto that treasure!
I got the same book while pregnant with my oldest (now 32)! Love that quilt and that you are saving it for the first great grandchild! So much love in it!
