It's A Finish! Baskets in the Hollows

Baskets in the Hollows
58 x 72
Hand Quilted

I finished the top last December when I was trying to use up my '30s reproduction scraps. I first made a bunch of little Wonky Baskets from 2 inch squares and waste triangles. I used a lot of muslin scraps for the background. The blocks finished at 4.5 inches.  Then I decided to make Hollow Nine Patches for an alternate block and set the blocks on point.

I did big stitch hand quilting with perle cotton #8 in a variety of colors. That process used up a lot of odds and ends of perle cotton.

I used more muslin scraps for the binding. And I noticed when I took these photos that there sure is a wide variety of different shades of both bleached and unbleached muslin!

The big stitching forms a neat pattern on the backing. As you can see...I was a little short on backing fabric...

...but I made do! There's always scraps to fill in the blanks.

  3. Lovely, lively quilt! I always love using scraps of muslin in 1930s quilts, it makes them look like the old quilts. I had to laugh when I saw the back, it is pieced just like an antique quilt I have. Delightful.

  6. That is an amazing quilt! I have never thought of using perle cotton #8. But it goes perfectly with the quilt and those reproduction fabrics. Note to self to remember this technique. You've created a true heirloom right there. -Andrea

  18. This is a darling quilt and I have absolutely no recollection of your working on it. I must be getting old. I av lots of waste triangles, but I can't imagine making that many little baskets. Definitely a charmer.

  22. What a sweet quilt! I love the look of different shades of muslin in a quilt... I have done that often. Makes it look more authentically old, to me. (I did not inherit enough antique quilts, so am making myself some, giggle)
