Whirlwind is my name for the quilt.
Twirla is the name of the excellent quilt tutorial I found at Butterfly Threads. (I changed the name of my quilt because Twirla is also the name of a contraceptive patch and a Umbra trash can).
70 x 84
Hopefully I will get this finished in time for a Christmas gift.
I was inspired by the colors in this fabric which I think I will piece with other fabrics for the backing. I always wanted to make a quilt in these colors. I didn't have enough purples, yellows (I wish my yellows were more on the goldish side) and grays to make the blocks so I also added in aqua fabrics.
These 14 inch blocks were fun and easy to make.
I may have to make another quilt in a different colorway.
There were a few scraps left over and I already know how I'll use them. I'll share in a future post.
very nice....love the colors
ReplyDeleteSeveral times I have used a fabric as color inspiration and the fabric itself never makes it into the quilt. Putting it on the back is a good idea!
ReplyDeleteOh that sounds like a fun quilt to make. Thanks for providing the tutorial link.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is beautiful. I know the feeling of wanting more of a color. I usually try to keep buying from a list of colors I am short of and trying to collect. Right now it is pale colors that seem to be in short supply in my stash but I am just trying to make due with what I have as buying stuff right now with everything shut down is not gonna happen.
ReplyDeleteGreat pattern, do you do it like a stack and wack, looks like a lot of color reversal or positive-negative blocks? And that fabric patch is beautiful, you got my attention can't wait to see what comes out!!!
ReplyDeleteLOOOVE it!! those colors are just beautiful together - and your backing is perfect for it!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pattern, love those colors all together!
ReplyDeleteI really like this top. I had seen the tutorial once before, now I need to go back and bookmark it for the future. It would make a great comfort quilt.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great top!! I love the color mix you have going and the pop the aqua gives it.
ReplyDeleteI like your name for the flimsy, and I love the pattern and colors! This is going to be such an awesome gift!

ReplyDeleteWhirlwind is gorgeous! I love the inspiration fabric - great idea to put it on the back!
ReplyDeleteFun and easy to make, sounds just like the blocks I like to stitch, not too much hassle. The top looks lovely, well done.
ReplyDeleteYour reasons for renaming the quilt really made me laugh. Looking forward to seeing what you make using the scraps leftover from the scraps you used in this quilt, Cathy. No waste at all.
ReplyDeleteI like your Whirlwind quilt! Good choice on a name! I hope your inspiration fabric finds a home on the back! That would be awesome!
ReplyDeleteAnother gorgeous flimsy. I printed that block pattern a while back. I love your colors. Great job!!!

ReplyDeleteNo way! You finished your Twirla flimsy already? Guess I'd better get busy. Your color choices worked great together! Sandy at sewhigh.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteDo you think the templates (per the pattern) are easier / more efficient than paper piecing?....But LOL at the connotations of the name. (Trying to figure out "twirla" and "contraception.")
