Pneuma - A New Top

It's a top!

It all started with a box of low volume strings and...


...with a few string heart blocks I made a few years ago.  My original intent was to make a whole quilt of String Hearts but then I decided I did not like the process. 

I had a  c. 1890 string quilt in my vintage inspiration journal. I decided those heart blocks would be a nice center row for this quilt and so I set about making my version. 



The Hourglass and HST rows were cut from low volume pieces from the 3.5 inch scrap bin and some were cut from scrap chunks. 
  Sometimes making a quilt from actual scraps and strings is a lot of work...far more work than just cutting up yardage. Taming long unevenly cut strings with strings...mostly backing trimmings...is not often an easy task.  But I did enjoy the process. 


 Pnuema is now ready for quilting...someday. 

Now I'm ready for something bright and wild. 

No...I did not empty my box of low volume strings AND I now have a big shoe box of low volume crumbs and short strings.  What to do...what to do...hmmmm...

    Wow! That most certainly was a lot of work...but so worth it. It's beautiful. I hope it gets quilted sooner rather than later, I'd love to see what that will look like. Have fun with the 'bright and wild' side of quilting next!

    Love this top, it's a great setting. You're so right about dealing with scraps and wonky cutoffs. They're very time consuming but they sure do produce really interesting quilts.

    Fabulous quilt top. It does take time and energy and it may be a bit frustrating to look at the before and after of your scrap box, but you have a Great quilt Top to remind yourself of the adventure!! cheers!

    Very cute and very pretty! The hearts are so sweet and I love piano key borders. This would make a great summer quilt or throw for cool evenings.

    That is a fantastic quilt! I can't believe how much I love it when it is so low volume!
    It sure is a lot of work making a quilt like this and I can appreciate all the hours that went into the construction and designing... amazing!
    I am also struck by the ways in which the quilt is similar to and yet different from the source of inspiration...fascinating!

    Such a good point about the extra time required when using scraps and strings. I'm glad you found a place to use those hearts. They look lovely, but since you don't enjoy making them, it's better to get them all out of the way. As always, you have such an immense stash. Good for you for using it first. And using it so well.

    What a wonderful interpretation of your inspiration quilt and what a lot of work. I know some quilters consider string and crumb blocks to be mindless sewing, but I don't. I'm trying to think of other ways to interpret the vintage quilt. I don't have nearly enough low volume strings to do one.
    We are finally home, stuck inside, and now it's snowing. Ugh. Time to get sewing, I guess.
