Spiraling Geese
66 x 77
It's a flimsy!
Made from scraps leftover from making a Vintage Spin quilt finished in January 2016.
My inspiration was this Spiraling Flying Geese quilt from the book History Repeated. I did not use the book instructions because my Flying Geese were a different size. I also added one more row and column than this one in the book. When I made the Flying Geese from leftovers I had no idea what I was going to do with them and only settled on this layout recently.
I see from an old blog post that I started making the Flying Geese from leftovers way back in August 2015. The blue-gray background was a big piece I purchased back when Hancock's went out of business. I think I have five yards and intended it for a backing. I have a pretty good chunk left that I may be able to use for backing on this quilt.
You may not have noticed my UFOs in 2019 page - a list of what I counted as UFOs as of December 31, 2018 -- but there's over 100 projects on that list. What possessed me to finally get this one from the list to flimsy stage? Well, I have belonged to the Stashbusters Yahoo Group for a number of years. A lot of ladies in that group also have lots of UFOs so a number of games are played to encourage us to bust stash and complete UFOs. I have participated in a UFO Challenge since I joined; however, I have not ever participated in the Random Numbers Challenge. The way it is played is you number your UFOs and then two random numbers are drawn each month and you try to complete those UFOs within the month. This year I decided to give it a try. These Flying Geese Leftovers from Vintage Spin was #84 on my list.
#84 started with 52 Flying Geese...
...and leftover scraps...
...to make more Flying Geese. I made 84 more Geese, decided on a layout, found enough fabric for the quilt background, did the math to put it all together and then put it all together. I don't think Ill get it completed this month but it's moved forward. And I still have lots of scraps left. Hmmmmm....
What a fabulous layout!
ReplyDeleteI'm off to check out your 2019 page!
I really like that layout for your flying geese! Looks like the background you chose is perfect for them, too!
ReplyDeleteOh what a fun quilt top!! Congrats on taking the plunge and push it closer to a finish. LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteIt’s eerie to me that you posted this today, because yesterday I went through all your quilt makes from your tabs and saved those I’d like to try or ask you about. One was “Which Way to the Chocolate?” which you finished in 2016. I was going to ask you about the size of those (and now these) geese. I had wanted to do a spiral like that with my square selvage blocks, but would’ve had to use an alternate fabric of the same width, and I wanted more selvage and less plain fabric. Obviously, the answer is to use a block that is rectangular rather than square (duh!). All that to say... I love this top!! Seriously, maybe we could name you as a charity and work to help you finish up your UFOs before the turn of the next century!! xo
ReplyDeleteAnd I thought I was the only one with 100+! We'll never run out of somethiing to work on
ReplyDeleteGreat work and organization!
ReplyDeleteAnd looks like fresh snow? Stay warm and thanks for
the encouragement.
Love it!
ReplyDeleteFabulous quilt! The background looks like sky for all those follow-the-leader geese!
ReplyDeleteNow I'm on my way to go through your list. I'll probably have to lie down afterwards... 8)
That Spiraling Geese layout is really very pretty, and as usual, you did a great job! I love making geese with Eleanor Burns Flying Geese Rulers. Maybe someday I'll make enough time to try that layout. I really do like it! ---"Love"
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of Random numbers to decide which WIPs you complete. You've made a great flimsy. Love the flying geese and the blue/grey sashing is a perfect partner for them.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, what fun! I just posted today on my own blog about the Spiraling Geese quilt I'm making! I love the colors in yours - blue and green and orange to make it pop!
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful quilt, and I love that you used those wonderful colours.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of using random numbers to pick a project. How high do the numbers go in your Stashbusters group? Are there folks with more UFOs than you? Are you finding that group struggling because of the changes to Yahoo, like Sunshine did?
ReplyDeleteI've always liked that layout for the flying geese. I've seen it before on Pinterest. How big are the geese?
ReplyDeleteGreat way to use your geese blocks. I really like that layout.
ReplyDeleteI was feeling bad because I had about twenty UFOs. I think I will start something new today :)
Thanks so much for sharing with Oh Scrap!
I didn't think I'd seen this one before and then you said it was back in 2015 which I guess that was before I started following you. Wish I had time to go back and read your earlier posts, but I barely keep up with my daily reading as it is. This flying geese quilt is wonderful and the background fabric is perfect.

Wow, I like your spiraling geese way better than the example in the book!
ReplyDeleteYour flying geese have a lot of life and it’s a fun layout - I can picture a child running a toy car from the outside in to the center of the quilt along that spiraling route!
ReplyDeleteI love this!
ReplyDeleteI just scrolled down through your UFO page - omigosh - I thought I was over the limit with all my projects! What a treasure trove of projects you have to work with!!! The spiraling geese is a great way to use leftovers - not the usual design which makes it even better. Congrats on the forward progress!
ReplyDeletep.s. Have I ever told you how MUCH I love the photo location you use? With the barn in the background and the quilt on the clothesline . . . and the changing weather conditions. Just so wonderful.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful scrappy finish! What a fun setting for those scrappy geese.
ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome quilt! glad you finished it!!! off to check out your list - sounds like a great idea!
