From the 4.5 Inch Scrap Bin

I haven't had a Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) project for a couple of years that uses 4.5 inch scraps.  Last project I made Flying Geese and turned them into Stars using the Geese as the points.  I used almost all of my 4.5 inch scraps in bright rainbow colors. Since then I seem to have filled back up the 4.5 inch scrap bin.

When I saw Patty's (Elm Street Quilts) HRT quilt top (and loved it) I figured that is what I should make with my 4.5 inch scraps.     The HRTs are 2.5 x 4.5 unfinished.
I used my Tric Rec ruler to cut them.  I made the brown ones first and ooops...I made a few backwards so there may be a few rogue HRTs in the top before all is said and done.  Or they may become an orphan block. Time will tell.

I also made a 16 inch block using orange 4.5 inch scraps and the complement color of blue.  Kathy Doughty (Material Obsession) makes and uses these units in several quilts in her books.  I'm making simple rail fence blocks with them.

And I'm thinking of adding nine patches to the list of blocks that come out of the 4.5 inch scrap bin but I haven't made any yet.

  2. I have a Tri Rec ruler set and have never used it, but your HRTs are enticing! I like the rail fence block, too!

  3. I always have to cut at least one HRT wrong before I remember the direction matters. I like the idea of rogue blocks!

  4. I really like your HSTs! What a great way to use up those rectangular scraps.

  5. I love those HRTs and have been thinking of doing some of those myself (once I read up on sizes and methods, because nothing is ever easy for me). And I’m definitely on the hunt for a Kathy Doughty book or two - you’ve been one of her biggest testimonials to great quilts (imho). Great ideas and blocks, as usual!!

  6. Great use of your scraps to make so many HRT units. Looked up Elm Street Quilts, a very good tutorial which I have saved in Pinterest.

  7. I'm so glad I couldn't see your use of dark blue and orange because it would have made me realize how fun a complementary color fractured rails might look. Then I would want to make one.

  8. I need more orange in my stash. Your blocks look great in both designs. I had seen Patty's HRT quilt and loved it. You always come up with the most fun quilt designs!

  9. HRTs are on my list for future scrap quilts. But mine will probably be a bit bigger. I look forward to seeing where you go with these.

  10. The rogue hrt's will be good in the quilt I reckon! Love the fabric combination in your block from Kathy's book, I made a quilt using this block when her book came out, great pattern.
