Baskets, Baskets!
No Tiskets or Taskets!
It's just a top for now.
If I remember correctly it's about 70 x 90.
I think I like basket quilts as much as I like butterfly quilts as much as I like star quilts as much as I like...
I THINK it was 2014 when I participated in two different baskets swaps using 30s reproduction fabrics. Of course one set of baskets finished at 7 inches and the other at eight inches so I had to border the 7 inchers with 1 inch strips in order to use them together. (Well, I suppose I could have done some other things to use them together so "had to" is probably not the correct choice of words).
Then I just sewed them all together randomly because you know I'm too lazy and not limber enough to get down on the floor to lay and relay them all out again and again. And you know how I don't like to dither or I would never get anything accomplished. And you know I never hang the quilt up after it's finished but wrap it around someone or put it on a bed so what's the diff?
Anyway, it never ceases to amaze me what happens with sewing randomly.
If I had this layout on the floor and had seen those two yellow baskets in the same "row" across or those two red with white leaves baskets in the same "row" across I would probably still be fiddling about on the floor.
And into the hand quilting pile it goes.
I think the baskets really tuned out well and if one didn't know some of the baskets were smaller than others they might think that was exactly how the design was with the way you finished them - it really gives a nice look

Great layout and frameing the smaller baskets to make up for the size looks great! UFO's united!!

I have never thought of making a Basket Quilt. Now that I have seen yours you have whetted my appetite! Love the colours. I know what you mean, you can fiddle around forever trying to ensure similar blocks are well spaced but when you sew them up there's always one which escaped the scrutiny. So, I'm with your school of thought, arrange the blocks quickly, the quilt will look great!
ReplyDeleteWell, in a *true* random sequence there would be some similar blocks near each other, so you've been successful at randomizing!

ReplyDeleteI love it! I really like that there are two different baskets and the filler strips work really well. I don't mind the two yellow, two red baskets. Everything is so scrappy anyway they look just right as they are.

I love basket quilts and am currently working on one with baskets that are very similar to your smaller one and I'm using 1930s prints too!I even recognize some of your prints. I love how you combined two different basket designs and framed them with half square triangles. I wouldn't have thought of that.

ReplyDeleteSuch a wonderful quilt. Using two types of baskets makes it look extra scrappy. And even when I fiddle and fiddle with block placement, I still get two colors in a row or some such. It looks awesome to me!

ReplyDeleteWell, whether you "had to" or not, I think it was a great idea to frame the smaller baskets. It looks like it was planned that way all along. I love your top. Excellent job, regardless of the yellows dancing together and the reds escorting the famous jazz-y one. Congrats! ;^)
ReplyDeleteI really like the layout you chose for your baskets - alternating the types of blocks and framing some of them! I find myself overthinking layouts way too often, and when I see what others do, and the fun, scrappy effect they've gotten, I realize the overthinking was not productive at all! I think your basket quilt top is beautiful!
