Blue Triangle Star
18 3/4 inch block
I first saw this block on Gayle's blog, Mangofeet. I loved the pic of a vintage quilt from a magazine and went searching for a similar pattern. I wanted to use my civil war scraps and a pumpkin background to make that star. Gayle's post mentioned it was from American Patchwork and Quilting, October 2009. That was enough to lead me to a free quilt pattern for the Triangle Stars that was inspired by the Vintage quilt called Wildest Dreams.
Before I started on my civil war scraps I thought I would give it a try with some pieces from the scrap bin. I had a few problems but it was easier than I thought. It looks like I don't have 1/4 inch seam near all those star points but I think I can fix that. And, so I'll practice on my colorful scraps and make one each month for Rainbow Scrap Challenge with the background color in the highlight color of the month.
And while I was in the blue scraps I sewed up a few 4.5 inch crumb blocks - 30 of them. I was going to make some crumb fish like I made in 2013 (below) but decided against it for now. They will probably get made into a donation quilt in the summer when I make smaller donation quilts because I don't have air conditioning and it makes it toooooo hot to quilt larger quilts.

W.O.W!!! that star is fantastic! don't undermine yourself: I know that wasn't the easiest block to piece- and you did a great job! so different from all the other projects (says the lazy square piecer!) a block a month in all the colors will look stunning! can't wait to see them all...

ReplyDeleteI've been successfully resisting starting that star quilt, but you've just made it ridiculously hard... Now I want to go rabbiting off cutting and sewing triangles starting right this very minute!

ReplyDeleteThat is a gorgeous star block! I love your idea of using the accent color as the background! And 30 crumb blocks! Makes me wish my 8" crumbs were 4" crumbs (but I can always fix that down the road). Will you share your source for the triangle star pattern?

ReplyDeleteCongrats! on your fishy finish. It's SEW cute!! You've been busy with your scraps and those crumbs are looking good, but I can't begin to imagine the botched up mess I would make of that beautiful triangle star block. Nice work!

That star is great and a good way to use your scraps. If you do one a month, that's going to be a neat quilt. You know, I've never made a crumb block, but I sure love yours. Might have to give them a try.

ReplyDeleteThose fish are so fun! Such a great way to use crumbs. Did you follow a tutorial or pattern in the construction of the fish? (The fish as a whole, not the crumb part.) I'd love to make some crumb fish of my own.
