This year I want to try to use up scraps...real scraps...strings, crumbs...chunks...they are taking over my sewing room. I've been working from two large garbage bags of strings which are mostly leftover backing pieces cut from the side of the quilt after quilting and before binding. They are long pieces. Plus thrown in there are end pieces...less than 1.5 inches wide.
Anyway, I'm making a string star quilt from some of those strings.

...from Crazy Cravings, Spider Web/Spider Man, Petunias and a couple more girly donation quilts. Ah, the memories! I found some indigo fabric on sale at Connecting Threads called Ghost Saltines to use as the background. I'm using a pattern from a Fons and Porter book that uses a diamond construction technique with no Y seams.

Oh, I love your string stars. String quilts are my favorites and then with a six pointed star is top of the world. Great job!

ReplyDeleteLove your 6-pointed stars ... makes me think of 7 (string) sisters. I have a string start idea that's been in my head for too long ... maybe in 2016 I can get it out of my head and onto my bed ;-)

ReplyDeleteI found it interesting that your inspirational quilts are all 8 pointed stars and you are making a 6 pointed star. It is fun to dig through the scraps and remember the quilts that created them. Enjoy :)

ReplyDeleteGreat string stars! I am in the middle of making one (its fairly big) but stuck on the set in triangle edges at present. Can you point me in the direction of the pattern you used - was it online or in a old magazine? Thanks for the links they were very inspirational, i will finish this quilt!
