Working the 1718 Coverlet by Hand (Row 1)


I'm making my version of the 1718 Coverlet. 
I'm using mottled solids  (Mirage line from Connecting Threads)
I'm going to sew together the whole darned thing together by hand using the same mosaic patchwork (aka English paper piecing) method that the original maker used. 
I'm using ladder stitch, not whip stitch to connect the pieces. I've tried both stitches on other projects but my ladder stitches look better to me. 

I've completed six blocks out of 9 in the top row excluding larger blocks on the ends. 



You can see the first row at the top of the book cover.  And these are the three blocks I have left for the row.  Wish me luck on that fleur-de-lis ...so far the blocks have been pretty easy. 

This is definitely going to be slow to finish and slow stitching.  I think it will be a nice project to work on this summer.

    Interesting quilt project. There are a lot of blocks to construct. I like the fabrics you are using.

    Really exhausting list from your last post, but what fun to be a voyeur and see all the progress! I like the start for the 1718 project, too!

    This is for sure a long term project to be savoured and enjoyed! i wonder how the templates were made in the 1700's?

    Wow! That's quite a journey you are embarking on but I am sure it will become your Master Piece Quilt. Good luck and enjoy the serenity it will bring.

    Wonderful that you are doing it by hand. I only have 8 blocks done so far by machine. Sometimes I think that the had sewing progresses faster.

    Good for you to hand stitch this. I'm relatively new to EPP and love it. I'm intrigued by your using it for such "unusual" pieces. My ladder stitches look better than my whipstitches when I'm EPP, too.

    I think you will have lots of fun hand piecing the coverlet--I'm sure that's how the original was made. I wimped out and will be machine piecing what I can and simplifying the applique. Love what you have done so far!
