Old Dan Tucker was a mighty man
Washed his face in a frying pan
Combed his hair with a wagon wheel
Died of a toothache in his heel.
Get out of the way old Dan Tucker
You're too late to stay for supper
Supper's over breakfast's cookin'
Old Dan Tucker standing lookin'
For Thirties Thursday I made four nine inch Wagon Wheel blocks (aka Dan Tucker's Combs) from my 30s and solids stashes. I THINK that makes a total of 16 blocks now.
And...wagon wheels remind me of a song we sang in chorus when I was in grade school...maybe the sixth grade...could have been fifth...it was long, long ago.
I have a dirty little secret...the reason I remember that Dan Tucker folk song is because a couple of my friends and I sang that song at recess one time when we thought we were not within hearing distance of an adult but substituted the words "Old Damn F-----"("f" word rhymes with Tucker" ) for the words "Old Dan Tucker". An adult (a nun) WAS within hearing distance. A call was made to our parents and later that day my mouth came in contact with a bar of soap. Ah....memories!
LOL! Love your story! Almost spit my coffee on the computer.
ReplyDeleteI've had my mouth washed out with soap, too. That's probably considered child abuse now. LOL. I love your 30s blocks, and your Wild Thing quilt is just gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThat is hilarious! Just your luck to have some creative inspiration to change the lyrics and have a nun standing right there! LOL Thanks for the smile today!
ReplyDeleteI remember this song from Little House on the Prairie... Mr. Edwards used to sing it! Good memories!
What a great story! I remember getting in trouble, too, from adults overhearing things I said as a child. Love your blocks!
ReplyDeleteHow funny! These are great blocks.:)
ReplyDeleteI have been searching the internet for the pattern for "Wagon Wheel; that you showed. Can't find it! Are you sharing the pattern or a link to it? I could probably draft it out, but I'm too lazy this morning!
ReplyDeleteOMG... I went to Catholic school, too. My big naughty was I took my notebook out to the playground to share with my friend... We weren't allowed to have slam books. (A question on each page where each of your friends writes an answer...how scandalous.) Our notebooks were filled with study materials based on our future plans. I wanted to be an MD and my friend, a lawyer. We still got "a good talking to" from Sister. At least I didn't get soaped.
ReplyDeleteI do remember the song, but my hubby who went to public school doesn't. Your Wagon Wheel looks like a difficult pattern.
Hugs
Ah...the taste of soap in the mouth. I remember it a little too well because of the song "The Name Game". Particularly when you decided to use the name Chuck. Chuck, Chuck, Bo Buck, Banana Fanna Fo ....I'll let you fill in the rest. Great blocks.
ReplyDeleteLove your wagon wheels! I remember that song too! Isn't if funny how things like that can bring back so many memories
ReplyDeleteI love your blocks.. I just went through your finished quilts.. THEY ARE GORGEOUS!
