The Wedding Quilt
Isabelle (a.k.a. Izzy or Belle or Bellarina), one of my granddaughters, is 8 years old. Several times in the last several years she has told me I'm going to live at least long enough to attend her wedding. Maybe she knows something I don't know. I hope she's not getting married for a long, long time!
On January 14 a driver talking on a cell phone ran a red light and hit me broadside - $6,000 worth of damage to the car. I tried to turn out of the path of the collision and came about an inch from hitting another car head on. I was not hurt - just shook up a little.
After that my granddaughter's words came back to me...that I would live long enough to attend her wedding. That got me to thinking I should start on a wedding quilt for her, finish it and store it away. That way...if I'm not able to attend her wedding I will be there in spirit.
Over the years her favorite colors have switched between red and purple. So, the color palette for her quilt will be red, purple and blue. I've pulled some of those colors from my stash. The pattern will be Double Wedding Ring a.k.a Pickle Dish a.k.a. Gypsy Kisses.
What a fabulous gift to make and save for her. My grandmother made a quilt fo reach of her grandchildren and as each married she gave them the quilt. They were nothing fabuloous just plain old fashioned scrap quilts. We all cherish them still and I have been married for 24 years and she has probably made them at least 10 years are more before we got them...What a wonderful gift idea. Your grandaughter will cherish it forever. everytime I look at my quilt. I think of my grandmother and her love of quilting and sewing. And yor granddaughter will also.
ReplyDeleteI save have a "hope" chest for my children and have been filling it up for them. I almost didn't make it after the first was born. You just realize you might not be there. I am so glad that you are ok. Good idea to start on a quilt for your granddaughter.
ReplyDeleteThe wedding ring is my favorite...I use quilts instead of draperies on my windows because they cut the drafts in this 107 year old house. I have wedding rings on 5 of the windows and never tire of them.. Sorry about your car and glad you are OK...

I'm so glad your okay, and what a beautiful gift you are making for your granddaughter she is very lucky and I hope you will be the one to give it to her on her special much later in life day.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was 12, my grandmother crocheted a bed topper of pansies for me, but did not give it to me until my wedding day at 22. She was in the hospital and could not attend, we went down to visit her in our wedding clothes. She gave me my bed topper, I still cherish it and my granddaughter want it,. She will get it along with a quilt on her wedding day.
