Farmer's Wife Samper Finish

It's a finish!

Farmer's Wife Samper
66 x 84

Most blocks can be found in the book Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt by Laurie Aaron Hird.

The actual Farmer's Wife Samper has 111 six inch finished blocks. I think I made about half of those blocks.  In March 2023 I dug out the blocks and made a decision to do something with them.   I decided to use an Hourglass as an alternate block. I counted my blocks and decided I needed a few more. I had belonged to a 30s Reproduction Yahoo Group that swapped blocks made in 30s repros so found a few six inch orphan blocks from previous swaps that would fit the theme.

And here we are in October 2026 and I finally have a finished top. This is one of my oldest UFOs.  I quilted it on my sewing machine with horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines.

I added a scrappy binding.

And sew on...

  3. Lovely quilt and a great way to use blocks just sitting around, waiting to be made into a quilt. Pefect for a lap quilt, happy stitching!

  4. Congrats on finishing an old UFO. It turned out so beautiful and it used up so many blocks. Well done. ;^)

  5. Beautiful! And I love how the hour glass blocks calm down the other blocks. I made the FW and I prefer your setting. Great job!!

  6. Oh WOW, Cathy!! Congratulations! I started making Farmer's Wife blocks around the same time you did and my blocks are still hiding shamefully in a project bin, covered with dust. I think I got frustrated with myself for going all over the place with fabric for each block instead of sticking to a unified theme or palette and didn't think the blocks would ever look good together in a quilt. So I am actually very inspired and encouraged to see how well your alternate hourglass blocks unify your sampler quilt. It's a gorgeous finish, and you might just have convinced me to dig out that box and reevaluate whether there is hope for my own Farmer's Wife after all these years!

  11. I love the hourglass setting for sampler blocks. So glad that you were able to finish this one up. The longer the UFO has been around, the better it feels to finish it off.
