String Stars That Inspired Me To Make One

This year I want to try to use up scraps...real scraps...strings, crumbs...chunks...they are taking over my sewing room.   I've been working from two large garbage bags of strings which are mostly leftover backing pieces cut from the side of the quilt after quilting and before binding.  They are long pieces.  Plus thrown in there are end pieces...less than 1.5 inches wide.

Anyway,  I'm making a string star quilt from some of those strings.
I spy backing from Crazy Basket Case, Pirates, Christmas Magic Mountains...

...from several donation quilts, a Quilt of Valor...

...from Crazy Cravings, Spider Web/Spider Man, Petunias and a couple more girly donation quilts.  Ah, the memories! I found some indigo fabric on sale at Connecting Threads called Ghost Saltines to use as the background.  I'm using a pattern from a Fons and Porter book that uses a diamond construction technique with no Y seams.

I was inspired to make a String Star quilt after I saw some String Stars I just fell in love with on some of my favorite blogs:

I'm sure you will find some other scrappy inspiration today at:

Love your 6-pointed stars ... makes me think of 7 (string) sisters. I have a string start idea that's been in my head for too long ... maybe in 2016 I can get it out of my head and onto my bed ;-)

You have so many wonderful scrap projects happening......lots to see here and plenty of inspiration! And I love the way you do your circles (previous post) I've been thinking of joining in but not sure if I'd see the distance if I have to needleturn. Thanks for visiting my blog too.

Your string stars are so pretty, and look like a great way to use up scraps! I enjoyed looking at the links to other star quilts, too.

I have some hand pieced heirloom string star blocks that need restoration and assembly. I might just have to get them out and work on them. Thanks for sharing your scrappy goodness with Oh Scrap!

I found it interesting that your inspirational quilts are all 8 pointed stars and you are making a 6 pointed star. It is fun to dig through the scraps and remember the quilts that created them. Enjoy :)

I noticed the 8 and 6 point variation, too. Love your strings and the dark indigo is a perfect setting. Congratulations on using the "leftovers" to such good effect.

So glad I found you on Monday Making. Those string stars are so fun looking. I even recognize some of the fabrics. Will check out the F and P site, sounds doable.
